Falcom released a fair amount of pre-smartphone mobile Ys games in the 2000's, they were mostly generic card, pinball or puzzle games featuring artwork, music and characters from a specific Ys game. They also released stripped down ports of Ys I and Ys II Complete, Ys III: Wanderers From Ys, Ys IV: Mask of the Sun: A New Theory, Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand (PS2), Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim, Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin.
All of these games were distributed either via DoCoMo's i-mode, au/KDDI's EZweb or SoftBank's Yahoo! Keitai, the three primary Japanese mobile services that hosted video game storefronts, that have since been shutdown. These games were made to only work on specific Japanese mobile phones of the time, which were several times more powerful than western ones. So far, the only game that has been preserved is the port of Ys I Complete, but only the trial version[1], and the only way to currently play the other titles is through a compatible feature phone with the games already installed on the device.
New Ys I: 3D[]
New Ys I: 3D (新イースI -3D- ) released on March 22nd, 2005 is a 3D remake of Ys I Eternal/Complete which features a new maze dungeon to explore simply called "Ruins" with a unique boss awaiting at the end. Dogi is introduced in this new dungeon instead of Darm Tower. The bump system was replaced with a more traditional combat system where the player has to press an arrow key to strike with the sword, the level cap is also higher than 10.[2][3]
New Ys I: 3D Gaiden[]
New Ys I: 3D Gaiden (新イースI -3D-外伝 ) or Ancient Ys Vanished The Truth: Adventure of Dogi released on December 19th, 2005, stars Dogi as the main character, as a warrior who had been training in Esteria under the guidance of the thief Goban Tovah.
The game is a side story to New Ys I: 3D that takes place within the same time frame but offers a different scenario.
Six months before the events of the game, the Stormwall surrounded the island of Esteria, this caused many inbound and outbound ships to sink into a watery grave, ever since then, the small country has been cut off from the rest of the world and was seen as cursed. A recent string of thefts of silver artifacts caught the attention of Dogi and he decided to investigate the matter, at least until the Stormwall ceased.
Dogi explores the same "Ruins" as New Ys I: 3D Gaiden only the dungeon has been expanded. His task is to collect the silver artifacts and sometimes return to town to speak with Goban, Jeba and Raba, Dogi is also able to collect new weapons and armor for him to use.
In the depths of the ruins there are several passages that are blocked and many diverging paths which makes it very easy to lose your way. This gives Dogi the chance to break down walls over and over again but doing so will drain his HP. Medicinal herbs cab be used to recover his health however sometimes it's necessary to return to town, so the nurse can properly treat him. Every time Dogi exits the dungeon a mysterious tremor causes previously explored paths to be blocked once more, so it's good to keep in mind which parts have already been explored.[4][5]
