Nippon Ichi Software, Inc. (株式会社日本一ソフトウェア?), also known as NIS, is a Japanese video game developer and publisher that has developed several popular role-playing games including the Disgaea and Marl Kingdom series. Their mascot is the penguin-like Disgaea character Prinny.

In addition to game development, NIS also operates a localization and global publishing branch called NIS America, which was founded in 2003. Originally focused solely on the North American market, it expanded to include Europe and other regions in 2007.

As a part of their localization efforts, NIS America was responsible for bringing Falcom's games to the western market, starting with Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana. This release was made possible through NIS's partnership with the Falcom, taking over localizing modern Falcom games after XSEED Games.

Ys VIII Controversy[]

On October 10, 2017 Takuro Yamashita, the president and CEO of NIS America, issued a statement apologizing for the quality of Ys VIII's English localization, and announced a free patch to address the quality issues by the end of November.[1] The patch was delayed to early 2018,[2] and eventually came out on January 30, 2018 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. The free patch included changes to the script, item names, in-game terminology, monster and boss names, graphical text, and a fully re-recorded English dialogue.[3]

The PC version, which was supposed to be released on the same date as the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita versions, was delayed multiple times due to stability and translation issues.[4] It was eventually released on April 16, 2018, but was heavily criticized for its numerous technical issues and shortcomings.[5] On January 17, 2020 NIS America released a major update for the PC version in collaboration with PH3 Games that improved graphics, performance, stability, input, and the user interface, and also added an experimental local cooperative mode.[6]
