Grimwald Nox concept art

The Grimwald Nox (グリムワルドの夜), or Nox for short, is an alternate dimension in which the Monstrums gather to fend off countless hordes of evil spirits, known as Lemures. Defeating the Lemures and dispelling the Grimwald Nox will release various barriers placed throughout Balduq, allowing the Monstrums to explore more locations throughout town. According to Aprilis, it is a realm where the line between humans and monsters become obscured.

Originally, the Nox was bestowed upon the people of Gllia as a gift from the Norse deity Grimnir. It has the ability to transform their negative emotions into the formidable creatures known as Lemures, which populate the Nox. Following this, Grimnir dispatches his demigods to vanquish these creatures.

In Woodlands of Woe, there is an inscription that would be read out by Tetra during the Side quest #33: Inscription Inspection that reads:

Long ago, a great suffering ravaged this land.
The people were beset by countless battles, rampant disease, and unbearable destitution.
Before long, their suffering gave birth to Impurity, begetting more suffering in turn.
The gods, in their pity for those who could do naught but pray, produced for them a single, unhatched Egg.
Ever-immaculate, this Egg bore upon itself the Impurity of man, becoming their solace.
Harken carefully, and hear the whispers of the trees floating upon the airy breeze.
Raise a prayer, and cleanse the body by the clear waters of the cascading falls.
Do so, and be absolved of the looming dark of night, granting peace to the land of man.
O Grimnir, Kings of Gods, with your loyal demigods beside you--
Eclipse the bewitching light of the moon, and guide humanity's prayers to the heavens.

In Game

Grimwald Nox battles are similar to the Beast Raids introduced in Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana: Adol and his party need to defend the Sphene in the battlefield from the monsters. Some Nox are mandatory to beat in order to progress further in the story.

Glossary

• Lemures: Mysterious monsters that emerge from black pillars throughout town, as well as in the Grimwald Nox. While invisible to the denizens of Balduq, the Monstrums are able to both see and eradicate them.
• Lacrimae: Solid crystals of concentrated enmity.
  • Large Lacrimae are worth 10 normal ones.
  • Time Lacrimae extend the time limit by 30 seconds.
• Purge Bosses: Appears after defeating a certain number of Lacrimae. Destroy all remaining Lacrimae upon defeat.
• Lord of the Night: A Lemures boss appears based on the type of Grimwald Nox—either Siege or Purge. It shows up in the final wave or after destroying a certain number of Lacrimae, except in the Coliseum of Madness, where it's already present.
• Black Pillars: Spawn points of the Lemures. A red light Black Pillar will spawn more powerful Lemures.
• Ambushes: Spawn points that appears in unexpected location to assault the Sphene.
• Arcae: Item boxes that drops after clearing a Black Pillar. A red light Black Pillar has higher chance to spawn one.

Types of Grimwald Nox

• Grimwald Nox: Typical Nox raids. Two sub types appears when you challenge a Grimwald Nox.
  • Sieges: The Monstrums need to defend the Sphene from approaching enemies.
  • Purges: Destroy all Lacrimae on the field within the time limit.
• Grimwald Eos: A Grimwald Nox for barriers to smaller areas.
• Miasma Vortex: Entrance to a Grimwald Nox that allows Adol to disable some barriers in Balduq and access more areas.
• Faint Miasma Vortices: A Grimwald Eos that has weakened. (When the Eos was not cleared in their chapter.) Clearing these will not expend the NOX gauge nor will they reward any Clear Bonuses.
• Full Moon Grimwald: A special form of Grimwald Nox with twin full moons and considerably more powerful Lemures.

Clear all 17 Grimwald Nox will unlock the function of changing Nox points into Twilight Shards directly through Lantern of Crossing.

Complete all 17 Grimwald Nox on Rank S grants you the chance to fight Vakh Medios at the Prison Outskirts. Defeating it earns you the reward Crown of Dawning.
