Profile[]

Chatelard is a dark-skinned man with light blue hair and yellow eyes. He wears the standard issue uniform of the Hieroglyph Knights but with a blue scarf around his neck. Chatelard is described as a handsome man with chiseled features that make him a popular individual among the townsfolk of Balduq.
He wields a great sword in battle.
Personality[]
Chatelard is an honorable man who strives to maintain peace throughout the land, as well as spread the word of the Hieroglyph Church. He has a tendency to grade others' actions and performance, and replying on the spot, like saying that Hawk's skill is a 40 out of 100 points after engaging him in battle.
Background[]
Eight years before the start of Ys IX: Monstrum Nox, the Romun Empire invaded the Kingdom of Gllia in order to annex it into the ever-growing empire. Imperial forces dominated the war from the beginning until the end. Following a large-scale battle on the outskirts of Balduq, the 4th Battalion, commanded by General Bourdan of the Gllian royal family, suffered defeat. The general retreated from the battlefield into the safety of Balduq's walls. The Romun army, with a victory in sight, pursued him without mercy, and in mere moments, Balduq was besieged by the Roaring Leo.

Depleted provisions, riots, and pillaging in Balduq.
The 4th Battalion was outmatched and desperate, for its provisions were depleted, and the city was being overrun by riots and pillaging from within. Knowing they wouldn't last, Chatelard, who was stationed with a company that chose to obey orders and stand their ground, executed a plan that would turn the tide of battle.
He would collaborate with local militia to launch surprise attacks, taking a small number of troops and sneaking past the siege under the cover of night. Under the guise of reinforcements using flambeaus, they would ambush the Romun army. In response, the 4th Battalion agreed to advance and launch a pincer movement.

Chatelard captured.
The maneuver was set into motion, and the stationary troops engaged the rear guard. The disarrayed Romuns struggled to respond. The troops waited for the 4th Battalion, but the the Balduq gates never opened, and the 4th Battalion never emerged. The cowering General Bourdon leading the local militia changed his mind and ceased his support, which led to a crushing defeat of the stationed troops.

Chatelard's defeat in the Erdlingen War.
The Romuns regained their composure and retaliated, making quick work of Chatelard and his company. Balduq's stationary troops were comprised of young, talented men. In all but an instant, all of Chatelard's trusted comrades were annihilated.
Chatelard proposed that the families of his fallen comrades be indemnified, but the royal family promptly refused. Shortly after, Chatelard was baptized and founded the Hieroglyph Knights in Gllia. Eventually, he became a venerable and deeply trusted ambassador between Gllia and Romn.
Ys IX: Monstrum Nox[]
When Adol first arrives to Balduq, Chatelard apprehends him in place of Warden Belger and sends him to Balduq Prison. He is shown to have more knowledge about the Monstrums and the prison city than he lets on.
When Hawk infiltrates the Hieroglyph Knights chapter, he and the other Monstrums encounter Chatelard. Chatelard easily defeats Hawk, but he lets him and the other Monstrums go for unknown reasons. When the Monstrums access the Restricted Sector of Balduq Prison, they find that Chatelard keeps a Primordial.
Chatelard's goal is the liberation of Gllia from Romun annexation, and he intends to do that by using Zola's alchemy to create a huge army capable of defeating the Romun Empire. He attempts to persuade the Monstrums into joining his cause, but tries to kill them when they refuse, stating that he will simply recreate them as obedient soldiers.
It turns out the real Chatelard was killed in the Erdlingen War, and the existing one is merely a homunculus created by Zola with the fake knowledge of him surviving the war. The clone dies, content that he will finally get to join his comrades.
We will take back... Gllia... This is the least I can do as a farewell gift for all the comrades who fell in the battle... and all the people who died in the war...
~ Chatelard
