Berhardt (ベルハルト) is a hermit who lives in the Elderm Mountains. Once a famous mercenary who travelled across the world, he eventually retired from the mercenary life. He taught swordsmanship and martial arts to Chester and Dogi respectively. He is one of the few people who are knowledgeable about the legend of the warrior Genos who defeated the ancient demon Galbalan that terrorized Felghana long time ago.
History[]
Twelve years before the start of Ys: the Oath in Felghana, Berhardt was hired by Count McGuire to destroy the village in the Genos Island. He was supposed to kill everyone who tried to run, but he could not bear to kill the Stoddart siblings, so he took them and ran. After leaving the siblings in Mayor Edgar's care, he started investigating Count McGuire's motives and the legend of Genos and Galbalan and taught martial arts and swordsmanship to Dogi and Chester respectively.
Years later, when Chester regained his memories and went to see Berhardt in panic, Berhardt ended up revealing the truth to Chester, which motivated Chester to plan his vengeance against Count McGuire.

Ys: The Oath in Felghana[]
In the game proper, Adol first goes to see Berhardt in order to learn about Galbalan and the four statues. Berhardt tells Adol that while Genos managed to defeat Galbalan, Genos was unable to destroy the beast completely and had to seal its powers into the four statues. Later on, when Chester goes as far as stabbing his friend Dogi for standing in the way of revenge, Berhardt reveals everything to Adol and tells him that Chester intends to use the power of the four statues in order to destroy the count. Berhardt takes care of grievously wounded Dogi while Adol sets off to stop Chester.
As the revival of Galbalan comes close to completion, vicious monsters start appearing across Felghana. Berhardt goes to Redmont village in order to help the villagers protect the town and advises Adol to take the boat to the Genos Island for the confrontation against Galbalan. While Adol goes on to defeat Galbalan, Berhardt fights off monsters, preventing them from reaching the village.
