Atra Nox Philius (アトラ・ノクス・フィリウス?) is the divine being transmuted from Adol's memories. As Zola's magnum opus, he was meant to replace Aprilis and the Monstrums as the sole warden of the Nox, freeing them from the curse. Unfortunately, Atra attempts to go about his task in the most destructive way possible.

History[]

Atra is created by combining the memories of the people Zola collected in the prison and the wisdom Adol gained from his adventures, along with the memories of the "special" people he met. Zola describes him as a being that is superior to the gods.

In Games[]

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox[]

Zola manages to successfully transmute Atra near the end of the game. Once Zola orders Atra to neutralize the threat of the Grimwald Nox, Atra declares his intention to wipe out the entire human population in Balduq, reasoning that as the Lemures are created from negative emotions of people in Gllia, the Grimwald Nox would no longer pose any threat if Balduq ceased to exist. Atra tries to eliminate Aprilis and the Monstrums as well since they are no longer necessary.

Realizing that he made a grave mistake, Zola attempts to destroy Atra, only to be struck down from behind. Adol and the other Monstrums engage him in a battle afterwards. Despite the party's best efforts, Atra seems barely fazed. Nevertheless, the battle gives Zola enough time to destabilize the force that holds Atra together. As the countless souls in Atra start separating, Atra goes out of control, transforming into the entity Anima Ergastulum. After the grueling battle, Adol and his party manage to destroy Atra and save Gllia from destruction by the man-made god.

Trivia[]

  • Atra looks a lot like an Eldeen version of Adol. This may be due to the fact that many of Adol's adventures involve the Eldeen civilization.
  • Atra appears to harbor many characteristics of the supernatural entities Adol faces throughout the series. He is created through the power of the ancient arts and artifact (Darm), turns against his creators (Galbalan), intends on wiping out the human population in one region (Rul-Ende), and later goes completely out of control (Ark of Napishtim and Akashic Records).
  • The players can hear Atra talk, despite his being created from Adol.
  • Atra is one of the few enemies that Adol could not destroy even after getting empowered with magical abilities/weapons and required further assistance, which in this case was Zola's making Atra unstable.
