Arem is the true main antagonist and final boss of the non-canon game Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys.
History[]
Generations ago after Celceta's transformation into a great farmland, corruption split the population into two warring factions that were fighting bitterly. What they failed to realize was that Arem, the then-leader of the Clan of Darkness, was making use of schemes and trickery in order to conquer Celceta with his armies, butchering many on both sides to the point he was called the "Lord of Slaughter".
After he conquered Celceta, he began to rule with an iron fist as he instilled fear into the survivors of the ruined Celceta and destroyed justice and inserted power in it's place. But one day, Lefance with the help of his five disciples arrived to put a stop to Arem's rule. After they've killed many soldiers in a bloody battle, Lefance challenged and killed Arem in battle in order to overthrow him, which also resulted in his surviving followers fleeing from battle.
This was not truly the end for Arem, however, as surviving members of the Clan of Darkness attempted to revive him over the centuries. After the latest ritual intended to revive Arem failed, Gruda heads off to find the sealed power of Celceta with the aid of Gadis and Bami to ensure the resurrection of Arem succeeds this time.

Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys[]
After Gruda betrays and kills Eldeel, he reveals to the dying Eldeen that the clan's true goal is the resurrection of Arem and teleports away after telling Adol and Leeza to watch as the land of Celceta burns before their eyes.
When Arem is resurrected, he is absolutely furious that he was defeated centuries ago and declares his intention to burn everything with the flames of hell before engaging in a mortal battle with Adol. Even as Adol gains an upper hand, Arem refuses to admit defeat and drains the souls of his followers who died in an attempt to take Adol to hell with him. But Adol manages to best him, leaving Arem to die in anguish as he falls at the hands of light again.
